Chapter 2: Search Engines
Idea 4: Specialist Directories
There are many specialist directories on the Internet that list sites only about certain subject (for example: directories of shareware software, directories of CGI scripts, directories of games, directories of astrology sites, etc., etc.). Submitting to directories which relate to your subject area can be a great way to generate traffic:
- Use Google and DMOZ to hunt down suitable directories.
- It's handy if you have a copy of the Free Alexa Toolbar
installed on your PC:
- When you find one directory, it will often lead you to more (and then more from there and so on) using the Related Sites feature.
- The Alexa rank will give you a rough idea of the popularity of any directory (the lower the Alexa rank, the more popular the site). Thus allowing you to concentrate most of your efforts on the most important directories.
- Think laterally, there is often more than one type of specialist directory who might take your site. For example:
- Imagine that you were a merchant selling Web Templates and you had your own affiliate program:
- You could list your site in directories of web templates.
- You could list your site in directories of webmaster tools.
- You could list your site in directories about web design.
- You could list your affiliate program in directories of affiliate programs.
- Imagine that you were a merchant selling eBooks about (say) "How To Train Your Dog":
- You could list your site in directories about dogs and dog-products.
- You could list your site in directories about pets and pet-products.
- You could list your site in directories of eBooks.
- You could list your affiliate program in directories of affiliate programs.
Being listed in niche/specialist directories, is important, not only for any traffic you get directly from them, but also because it can help your link popularity in the Spider-Based Search Engines (see Idea 1: Spider-Based Search Engines). Obviously, listing in all these places can take a lot of time and effort (perhaps weeks!), so you may find directory-submission software such as Directory Dominator helpful with this task.
