Chapter 5: Leveraging Your Visitors

Idea 28: Tell-A-Friend

Tell-a-friend forms are forms that a user can fill-in to tell a friend (or friends) about your site. Typically, their friends will receive an email inviting them to visit.

Tell-a-friend forms work best when you give the sender a real reason or incentive to send the information (and you're not just blindly hoping that people will use it).

You could encourage people to use your tell-a-friend form:
  • By offering a free gift for doing so (for example, entry into a sweepstake (see Idea 62: Sweepstakes and Contests), or an eBook).

  • By designing pages specifically designed so that people will want to forward them to their friends (making pages/sites containing pranks, practical jokes and general fun, is a popular method of doing this - as is making postcards, see also Idea 29: Post Cards, Greeting Cards and eCards).
As to the technical stuff, you can implement a Tell-A-Friend form using a CGI or PHP script, or you can use Bravenet's remotely hosted forms.
