Chapter 4: Trading Links and Traffic
Idea 16: Exchanging Links
The Web is about hyperlinks, and exchanging links with other sites ("reciprocal linking") is a very popular way to increase web site traffic:
- You can get more traffic directly when people see your link on another web site, and click on it.
- You can get more traffic indirectly because all these extra links can increase your link popularity in the Spider-Based Search Engines (see Idea 1: Spider-Based Search Engines). However, be warned, that exchanging links with low-quality or unrelated web sites, can actually undermine your Search Engine ranking.
When considering sites to exchange links with, we recommend that you use the Free Alexa Toolbar to check them out to see how they're doing before making a decision.
Finally, if you have multiple web sites, you ought to consider linking between them (see Idea 115: Linking Between Your Web Sites).
