Chapter 11: Getting Other Webmasters To Promote Your Site
Idea 92: Starting A Top Site
In a previous article (Idea 21: Joining A Top Site), we suggested that you could join somebody else's top site. Another idea is to start your own.
To refresh your memory: A Top Site is a site containing a list of sites which are ordered by the number of "votes" they have received. Each member of the Top Site gets their votes, by placing a special HTML voting link on their web site, and asking their visitors to click it. The more people who click on this voting link, the more votes they get. Members want to gain as many votes as possible, because the more votes they get, the higher up on the Top Site they are listed - And sites listed near the top of the Top Site tend to get more visitors back.
Why would you want to start your own Top Site?
The answer is that the owner of the Top Site benefits more than any individual member: Every person who votes on any member of the Top Site, visits the owner's site (the Top Site itself):
If you do decide to start a Top Site, you'll probably get better results by focusing in on a fairly well-defined (possibly narrow and specific) topic.
