Chapter 11: Getting Other Webmasters To Promote Your Site
Idea 96: Creating Shareware and Freeware Software
If you know a bit of programming (or can hire a programmer), you could create your own shareware or freeware software, and distribute it online.
- Freeware means that people can download and use your program for free (although you may apply Terms and Conditions).
- Shareware means that people can download and use your program for free, but are required to pay ("register") you to get full access to the program. Users who have not paid may be granted access to a subset of the features available in the paid version, or may be only able to use the program for a trial period, etc.
Of course all your software can include links to your web site, but more importantly, if your software is truly useful, it will be seen by people that would otherwise have never heard of you:
- There are lots of web sites that list freeware and/or shareware software. Most of them list it for free. And some of them have tons of visitors.(Please read the next article, Idea 97: Creating Shareware and Freeware Software - PAD Files, before submitting to these sites).
- You have probably seen shareware and freeware software on magazine cover disks, in CD-ROMs in the back of books, even sold on compilation CDs in computer stores. The publishers of these items are getting the shareware and freeware from some where... if your program is good, it could be you.
