Chapter 3: Choosing Your Domain Name

Idea 9: Easy To Remember Domain

Choosing a domain name that is easy to remember, can help increase traffic to your site.
  • If your URL sticks in visitors' minds, they will know what to type into their browser address bar even if they don't have a bookmark on your site.

  • If your URL sticks in visitors' minds (and they are interested in your site's content), they can mention it in conversation to others, and you can get word-of-mouth traffic.
Not convinced? How much traffic do you think Yahoo!, Hotmail, and eBay because they have easily memorable URLs, are mentioned in conversation, etc.?

But get a .com: Even if you want to get a country-specific URL (example: .co.uk), be sure to get the .com version as well:
  • Many web browsers will default to .com if the user starts typing in a URL into their browser's address bar.

  • Many web surfers will also assume .com when typing in the URL (and if you stick to .com, it's also one less thing for people to remember, which helps make your URL more memorable).
Finally: What happens if you can't find a suitable domain that isn't already taken? Well you could either could make an offer to buy one of the taken domains from the current owner (of course there's no guarantee that they'll accept or even be interested) - or you could check out domain auctions sites like Afternic.com and Sedo.com.
