Chapter 6: Building Email Lists

Idea 46: Buying Leads and Lists

It is possible to buy leads and entire lists.

If you buy leads, these may be just people who have expressed an interest in receiving info on a subject (people interested in "home business", people interested in "dogs", etc.). Consequently, it may be okay to contact these people once (perhaps to ask them if they want to subscribe), but it's probably not okay to just add them to your ezine.

As always, be sure to use a reputable service (and check where and how they get their leads/lists). as you don't want to end-up spamming people. We'd strongly recommend that you avoid those CD-ROMs which contain random names/addresses harvested off the Internet (these will get you accused, rightly, of spamming).

Non-spam (the only kind we would recommend) leads/lists services generally work this way: They advertise your list - or a subject-specific list (which later becomes your list) - and people opt-in (i.e. ask for themselves to be added to your list, or receive information from you). However the leads/list service works, the key to look for is that people have truly opted in: that is the what makes the difference between non-spam (sending people info they have specifically requested), and spam (sending unsolicited and unwanted email to people).
