Chapter 11: Getting Other Webmasters To Promote Your Site
Idea 84: RSS Feeds
RSS Feeds are files that go on your site, which contain information about the most recent news, updates and additions.
RSS Feeds useful for all kinds of reasons, including:
- Some people (more and more everyday) have news reading software, which allows them to see the latest news from their favorite sites, and easily visit them.
- RSS Feeds can also be read by other web sites (including some news sites, some search engines, and any other interested webmaster with the right skills). These sites can read your RSS feed, and if you give them permission, publish your headlines and summaries on their sites - but users are sent to your site to see the full information.
- Because RSS Feeds typically contain news, sites which use them (including some news sites and some search engines) typically read them fairly frequently (daily or more frequently). This means the news you publish in RSS format gets out quickly.
- There are many web sites which accept submission of RSS Feeds. Some of these sites may use your RSS feed themselves, in order to make use of your content, others contain directories of RSS feeds which can them be browsed and used by other webmasters.
If you want to create a RSS feed, there are several ways to do it, including:
- If you have a Blog, most Blogging software creates RSS feeds automatically.
- If you use a Content Management System ("CMS"), it may create RSS feeds automatically.
- It may be possible to create CGI or PHP scripts to create RSS feeds based on your current site.
- You can create RSS files in a text editor manually (but it's hard work) and then upload them to your web site.
