Chapter 5: Leveraging Your Visitors
Idea 23: Traffic Conservation
If you keep visitors on your site for as long as possible, so they view as many pages as possible, you get two benefits:
- If your site is supported by advertising or affiliate programs, your visitors will see more of your ads.
- You can earn more credits from Banner Exchanges (see Idea 18: Banner Exchanges) and Text Link Exchanges (see Idea 19: Text Link Exchanges), allowing your ads to be shown more on other people's web sites (and getting you even more visitors).
So how do you retain traffic?
- You make your site as "sticky" as possible (for example by providing lots of good quality content), so people don't want to leave.
- You should think carefully about your web site's navigation system and menus. This is so people can easily all find your content, and so they will click through to many pages of your site.
(Some webmasters even deliberately design their menus so as to encourage extra page-views during navigation - obviously there's a fine line here between getting the user to view extra pages to navigate your site, and annoying them so much as to drive them away).
- You should think carefully about outgoing links from your web site and whether each outgoing link is truly necessary.
