Chapter 3: Choosing Your Domain Name

Idea 15: Abandoned/Expired Domains

Sometimes people or businesses don't renew their domains. They lose interest, they die, their company goes out of business, etc.

When this happens, the domain registration eventually expires, and the domain becomes available and up for grabs. (But you won't probably won't get it by trying to register it manually, because it's almost certain somebody else will beat you to it - instead you'll need to use a service like SnapNamesWe particularly like this).

Although the previous content will be long gone, there will be a residue of traffic that continues arriving at the domain - which the new owner gets for free (you could even set up the domain to forward to your existing web site). This residual traffic typically comes from things like:
  • Other sites with links to the domain (including, if the new owner's particularly lucky, major search engines and directories).

  • People with bookmarks on the domain.

  • People who remember the domain and type it in, not realizing the original site is no longer there.
Finally, if you want this kind of traffic, but don't want to find and register abandoned domains yourself, or if you need a lot of traffic quickly, please see Idea 77: Buying Abandoned Domain Traffic.
