Make sure you explain why people should sign up (what's in it for them?)
Some people offer a free gift (like entry into a Sweepstake (see Idea 62: Sweepstakes and Contests) or an eBook) to people who sign-up. To discourage people from entering fake email addresses, you should set-up your system so the free gift is delivered in the first message - and tell your visitors that is how it will be delivered on the sign-up web page.
