Chapter 4: Trading Links and Traffic
Idea 20: Pop-Up Exchanges
Pop-Up Exchanges are programs (nearly always free) that you can join, where members show Pop-Up windows linking to each other's sites: You show Pop-Up windows containing other people's sites, and in return, they show Pop-Up Windows containing to yours.
Different Pop-Up Exchanges vary greatly in many different ways, including:
- What types of sites are allowed to join.
- Whether you can choose on what type of other sites your Pop-Ups will be shown ("targeting").
- When and how Pop-Ups are shown to visitors (when a user arrives at a site, when a visitor leaves (sometimes called "Exit Consoles"), in a foreground window, in a background window ("Pop-Unders"), etc.).
- The exchange ratio. For example: A 2:1 exchange ratio would mean for every two Pop-Ups that you show on your site, one of your Pop-ups is shown on somebody else's site.
On the plus side: as everybody who sees the Pop-Up window is visiting your site, they can greatly increase your total visitors (for example, a 2:1 exchange could increase your visitors by 50%).
On the negative side: Many people close Pop-Ups immediately, particularly if the Pop-Ups aren't targeted to their interests. And, of course, Pop-Up windows can be annoying for your visitors, so you'll want to think carefully before deciding whether to join one.
Finally, if you have multiple web sites, you could consider Pop-Up linking between them (see Idea 116: Pop-Up Your Other Site).
Additionally, if you want, you can buy Pop-Up displays on many Pop-Up Exchanges (see Idea 76: Buying Pop-Up Adverts), often even if you are not a member of that particular Pop-Up Exchange.
